We’re excited to share that we’re the first local convenience retail supporter of parkrun; the UK’s largest running movement.

parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation that holds free, weekly 5km timed runs across the UK. The runs are open to everyone and take place in parkland surroundings where people at all levels of fitness are encouraged to take part. There are currently 450 parkrun locations across the UK and over 1 million runners.

parkrun shares our values and commitment to supporting communities, and our partnership will work to create a healthier and happier community through exercise, food and lifestyle.

We’ll be offering healthy, simple to prepare and affordable recipe ideas and food inspiration to participants. Our events team will be at selected parkrun events over the next few months to say hello to runners and hand out healthy Co-op snacks, recipe books and money off coupons. They’ll also be talking about our Co-op Membership and encouraging runners to sign up on the day. Look out for lots of recipes and healthy eating ideas on our social media channels and at coop.co.uk/food.

Amanda Jennings, our Marketing Communications Director for Co-op Food said about the partnership:

“We’re delighted to partner with parkrun. As a retailer focused on providing for the community you only have to see a parkrun to appreciate that this partnership is the perfect match.

At Co-op we’re proud to champion a different way of doing business and we understand the communities we operate in. As like-minded organisations working together we share the passion of supporting and building links within the community and encouraging the nation to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

We want consumers to not only choose Co-op, but to assist them in building healthy, tasty meals using good quality fresh ingredients, and help to pull communities together.”

To launch the partnership, we’ve joined forces with the British Para Athletics Team

We’re celebrating their many successes at the recent World Para Athletics Championships London 2017 by inviting some of the medallists back to their own communities, where they’ll attend a parkrun.

Eight parkruns are involved in the partnership launch on Saturday 9 September, and participants will have the chance to meet with these amazing athletes before and after their own parkruns – locations include Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff and London. If you’re already planning to join these parkruns we’ll look forward to seeing you there, and if you’ve never tried parkrun before why not give it a go?

Fancy blogging about your parkrun experience?

We’ll also have a weekly slot on parkrun’s blog and we’re looking for colleagues to be guest bloggers, to write about their parkrun experiences first-hand. Helen O’Neil, HR Business Partner for North Division and passionate parkrun supporter will be writing our first blog. Helen’s completed 110 parkruns across 26 different locations so we couldn’t think of anyone better qualified to explain what makes Co-op and parkrun so special!

Whether you’re new to parkrun or have completed even more than Helen has, if you fancy blogging about what it means to you we’d love to hear from you. Please contact parkrun@sportcel.com to get involved in the blog, tell us what you’d write about and the team will be in touch.

  2. Really pleased to see this collaboration with parkrun. I am coming up to my 25th and absolutely love the friendly atmosphere and camaraderie. Great idea that I think a lot of people will appreciate and puts Co-op at the fore front of Healthy Living & lifestyles.

  3. A great partnership, so pleased to read this. Parkrun is a great organisation and with the strength and power of Coop in the community behind it, will surely only go from strength to strength !! Well done Coop

  4. Parkrun is amazing and testament to what grass roots organisations can do in bringing communities together, making sport accessible for all and encouraging us all to use our local parks. I know that my local parkrun often struggles to get volunteers every week, I hope that we can help with this as well as recipe cards and healthy snack ideas 🙂

  5. This is a fantastic partnership, I am very excited about this!!

The Park Run ethos is such a good match to our values and community focus. I have taken part and volunteered at several park runs, to see the simple, inclusive concept grow to what it is now is fantastic.

I would encourage anyone to go along to one near you to see what it is all about.
