Then Co-op Food team picking up the award

At last night’s IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) Awards, our Co-op won the Business Transformation Award.

Winners at the IGD Awards

Food Chief Exec, Jo Whitfield, Jane McCall, John McNeill and Adam Roche with our IGD Business Transformation Award

This recognised how we turned our Food business around from 2013 to become the UK’s number one convenience retailer.

We did this by focusing on our purpose –  ‘championing a better way of doing business for you and your communities’ and investing in our colleagues.

Many of us are familiar with this story, and it’s great to be recognised for what we’ve achieved – especially coming so soon after our interim results which showed how different we are from PLCs and how much we’re putting back into our communities.

Matt Clark, Director at KPMG, said: “The Co-op is a great example of a business which has gone from near extinction to resurgence and growth to make itself relevant again in a fast-paced market.

“On top of being able to demonstrate strong financial results, the scale and complexity of its transformation story enabled it to get back to its core values and simplify the business, all whilst remaining focused on its people, members and community. Congratulations to the Co-op!”

Well done to everyone involved.

  1. Congratulations on winning these well deserved awards. Are there plans to tell our customers in stores all this good news when they do their shopping, or for non customers as they walk past, so it might get them in?

    • Hi Sue. Yes, for those products that win these awards, and are in a high distribution (i.e., they’re in a lot of our stores) there is advertising planned. Sometimes it’s on the shelf, sometimes it’s on the product. One of the most common places to see it is on our wines where we often have gold, silver and bronze awards on the bottle itself. ^Kevin

  2. Great news but my local Coop has been out of stock of the hard boiled eggs with mustard mayo snack for four days now. As I have them as part of my breakfast every day I’ve had to go to Boots…
