Making the right choice of wine and fizz can make or break your Christmas celebrations, so we met with Gyles Walker, our Senior Wine Buyer for some hints and tips to make sure you’ve got it covered.
So let’s start with the big day itself.
Gyles told us: “Whether you’re having a full traditional roast, or a veggie option, our
Co-op Irresistible Crianza Rioja with its smooth berry fruit flavours and hints of vanilla and black olives will perfectly complement your centrepiece. There’s also our delicious Co-op Irresistible Casablanca Pinot Noir which has layered berry flavours, including black cherry and has a crunchy freshness which’ll rival your cranberry sauce!
“And if you’re looking to start with smoked salmon, it’ll be sublime with our Co-op Irresistible Sauvignon Blanc with hints of nettle and elderflower, or our Cune White Rioja – a creamy white with fresh lemon flavours which’ll help pave the way for a turkey roast (at £6.99 until 2 January – saving £2). They’ll both really kick-start your taste buds and get them ready for the feast ahead.”
When it comes to the perfect Christmas toast, whether it’s to family, absent friends or just to compliment the chef, Gyles told us: “There’s nothing better than our Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne which won a prestigious gold medal at the World Champagne and Sparkling Wine Championships. For both the £25.99 vintage and £16.99 non-vintage we’re the only retailer to win gold for own-brand champagne, alongside the likes of Dom Perignon and Cristal!
It’s often described as an easy drinking champagne with great freshness. If you’re looking for a great taste, but don’t want to break the bank, look out for our Co-op Rosato Spumate – it’s new in store at a cracking price – just £7.99”.
And today our Co-op Irresistible Prosecco tastes even better as we launch our fantastic 2 for £14 deal in England and Wales stores, a great opportunity to stock up for Christmas.”
For perfect party pleasers Gyles tells us: “There are two reds which we’ve been shouting about: the Il Sarmento Nero D’avola (recently named the best value wine in the UK in The Daily Mail) and our Co-op Spanish Garnacha (which wowed the Saturday Kitchen crew at a recent showcase). Both are amazing value at £4.99. If you’re looking for a white, try our Verdicchio Dei Castelli de Jesi at £5.79 – a fresh zesty white that offers a zippy alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.”
And for later into the evening if you’ve still got room for a mince pie, then Gyles suggests our Co-op 10-year old Tawny Port “With its raisin and nutty flavours it’ll perfectly complement the fruit and spice of the mince pie and leave you feeling warm and cosy inside. We’ve also got a couple of excellent dessert wines. Try the Platinum award-winning Domaine de Lasserre Jurancon and another Top Pick in the Mail’s roundup – it’s a fresher apricot scented dessert wine (£6.99). Or Chateau Roumieu Sauternes if you want a richer more honeyed style (£12.99).”
And one final note from Gyles if you’re looking a bit further ahead from Christmas day: “We’ve no doubt that you’ll have left-overs which will need some attention on Boxing Day, so if you’re entertaining and pulling out all the stops with a Boxing Day buffet – our Co-op Chateauneuf de Pape with its baked fruit flavours and spice cuts through the richness of a left over roast, particularly beef – it’s a perfect indulgent treat for your family and friends. There’s also our Co-op Irresistible Mount Benson Australian Shiraz which leading wine expert Matthew Jukes has called the ‘best Australian Shiraz under £7 in the UK’ in his Daily Mail top picks for the year.”
