Nisa and Co-op logos side by side

This week the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has started to look at our acquisition of Nisa. It’s an important milestone, but it could take a while for the CMA to decide and, while it’s ongoing, there are lots of legal restrictions about what we can and can’t do.

What we’ve been doing

In the meantime, we’re getting ready. Where we can, we’re working closely with Nisa to develop our ways of working. Last month Jon Wormald, our Implementation Director, visited Nisa’s Member Support Centre in Scunthorpe to talk to them about the Co-op and what we do. As you’ll know, we’ve also signed a five-year wholesale agreement with Costcutter Supermarkets Group and we’re making good progress on how we’ll work together.

Both Nisa and Costcutter retailers would also have the opportunity to become Co-op franchisees. It’s a great way to expand our brand, so we’re taking what we’ve learned from our trials with MRH to strengthen our offer and encourage more retailers to get involved.

A reminder of why we’re doing this

We want to grow our business and become the number one convenience retailer in the UK. Our wholesale and franchise ambitions will help us get there by increasing our reach across more than 5,000 extra shops, spreading our Co-op difference into even more communities across the country.

But it’s not just about seeing more Co-op in more places, it’s also about working together to bring benefits that grow value for our members. It’s a key part of Co-op’s five-year plan; investing in new areas where we can serve our customers and members better.

What’s next?

There are a lot of commercially sensitive things that we can’t talk about yet because we’ve got to wait until the CMA make their decision on Nisa. But our plans are picking up pace now and it’s incredibly exciting. I look forward to telling you more as soon as we can!
