This week we scooped three awards for our charity and community work, including awards for our Insurance business, our Chair Allan Leighton’s work with the Co-op Foundation and our Charity Partnership with the British Red Cross. These are great examples of how Co-op colleagues are working round the clock to achieve our ambition of making our communities stronger.
Here’s what we won:
Business Charity Awards – Best Charity Partnership – consumer goods / food and beverage
We won this for our campaign to tackle loneliness with the British Red Cross. Thanks to colleagues and members who raised £6.7 million, we’re funding new British Red Cross services in 39 locations across the UK, to help reconnect thousands of people experiencing loneliness. We’ve also done more research into loneliness, increased awareness of it, and helped bring it to the attention of the Government. You can find out more at coop.co.uk/loneliness
Better Society Awards – Philanthropy award
Our Chair Allan Leighton and the Co-op Foundation won a Philanthropy award which recognises the contribution a business leader has made to community work. Since joining us in 2015 Allan’s donated 100% of the pay he receives from Co-op to the Foundation. His generosity has been key to the Foundation’s relaunch as the Co-op’s charity, making a difference UK-wide. The Foundation’s Belong programme will help 5,000 disadvantaged young people work together to tackle loneliness. You can find out more in the 2017 Impact Report.
Better Society Awards – Carbon Reduction or Carbon Offset Programme of the Year
Our Insurance business won this award for its commitment to tackling carbon emissions. As well as having an ethical investment policy that makes sure customers aren’t funding businesses whose core activity contributes to climate change, they offset a proportion of customer carbon emissions through projects like this in Ghana.
And a nomination for Leading Co-operative of the Year
We’ve also been nominated for ‘Leading Co-operative of the Year’ in the Co-operatives UK awards, for our work supporting local communities in the UK. If you think we should win, vote by 15 June.
Well done to everyone involved!
