We’ve been celebrating this week as our newest arrival – travel insurance – has been named a Which? Recommended Provider – a great achievement in just four short months. And this week our new product has also made headlines around the country following our research* into children falling ill on holiday.
We found that:
- 37% of parents have had a child fall ill or suffer an injury on holiday
- Despite this, 48% of parents don’t take out travel insurance for family holidays
- £606 – the average claim for an unwell child, with some claims reaching the thousands
- More than a quarter of parents (26%) have cancelled or considered cancelling a family holiday because their child was unwell.
Online, Yahoo! Finance, AOL, Sun FM, Midlands 103, and NOVA covered our findings, with newspapers Daily Record, Yorkshire Post, Shropshire Star, and Wolverhampton Express and Star picking up the story at the weekend.
In terms of the most common ailments parents say their children suffer on holiday, stomach bugs, flu and chickenpox top the list of illnesses, whilst cuts, insect bites and bruises are the most common injuries suffered by children on holiday.
|Top five illnesses||Top five injuries|
|1||Stomach bug (24%)||Cuts (38%)|
|2||Flu (22%)||Insect bites (31%)|
|3||Chickenpox (17%)||Bruises (30%)|
|4||Food poisoning (12%)||Sprained wrist (25%)|
|5||Ear infection (12%)||Bump to the head (17%)|
Further illnesses and injuries contracted by children on holiday include allergic reactions (9%), concussion (6%), and Jellyfish stings (4%).

We want to ease that financial burden and help families feel safe on holiday. For that reason, during the summer months, we’ll be offering free travel insurance for children under the age of 18.”
