I shared the news late last year about our plans for our new distribution centre outside Inverness. Over the past year, so many different teams have worked really hard to get the centre in Dalcross ready, so it’s great to see it up and running so quickly.
Having the right distribution network to support our stores is vital to achieving our Stronger Co-op Stronger Communities ambition, and our plan in Food to be the UK’s number 1 convenience retailer.
The £6m facility will be home to 50 Co-op colleagues who’ve moved across already. It’ll support our existing stores and also our £28 million investment in growing our presence in Scotland, which includes 18 new stores and 20 refits by the end of the year. This will take the total number of Scottish stores to 365, with 6,000 colleagues employed in the region.
The modern and future-proofed depot replaces a much older facility, and is a significant upgrade. The building and yard have been designed to our needs, making the flow of goods and vehicles much safer and more efficient, and our new warehouse management and vehicle tracking systems allow us to easily track every product and vehicle in or out of Dalcross. It’s fully temperature controlled too, so products stay fresher for longer.
Better for colleagues and the environment too
Dalcross supports our aim to be greener too. Because it takes more double decker vehicles it means we can ship even more products while making fewer journeys – reducing CO2 emissions and cutting 1,800 road miles a day.
We’ve also improved the colleague facilities significantly from the old site, in line with our latest depot design standards. This was really important for us to get right.
Thanks to everyone who’s helped make this happen – we’ll keep you updated on our ambitious plans for serving even more communities in Scotland.
