I’m really excited that a new test product, Co-op Student Insurance, will launch this week and run until 31 August this year. My colleagues and I have spent the last few months getting this innovative product, offering students a completely new way to insure their belongings, ready to try out.

The product allows student renters to cover items such as mobile phones, laptops, and bikes and other possessions against accidental damage or loss and theft and anywhere in the UK.

The student gets to choose what items they want to insure, add or remove items to suit their circumstances and pocket, they can do this quickly and easily as everything is done digitally. They can choose how to pay either monthly or for an academic term (minimum of one calendar month) and there are no additional fees or charges.

We’ll be offering the product to 150 students initially to test and tell us what they think. As well as being a truly digital product it is also a great example of One Co-op working together. We’ll offer testers some incentives to take part including a £10 Co-op Gift Card* and a coupon worth £3.29 off a Co-op branded pizza* to spend in Co-op Food stores when they upload a photo of their first insured item.

This supports Food’s goal of engaging and bringing a younger demographic into Co-op stores. We’ll be advertising this in Co-op Stores set within University campuses to make sure we’re marketing this to students – our target audience.

We hope that colleagues and their families will get involved in this beta testing to help shape the product. If you are a student or have a student in your family you can find more information on student insurance here. When signing up to be part of the trial please use your personal e-mail address and not your co-op e-mail address.

  1. Is this only for families of Co-op staff, or can anyone join in?

    • Hi Robert….the product is available to students or parents of students. They don’t have to be Co-op staff or their families. The last day to sign up is 14th February 2019.

  2. Could you do a 6 month tenancy home insurance product please? Most tenancies are 6 months to start with and it’s not really sensible to buy 12 months insurance when you’re only guaranteed 6 months to start with, before the possibility of staying on for an extra month at a time. It would be great if more home insurance products matched tenancy conditions.

    • Thanks for your feedack Kat – the Student Beta test is the first of our products aimed at the private rented sector. We agree with you that insurance products for renters need to be more flexible and that is one of the features of the student insurance we’ve designed. We plan to test other new products aimed at the private rented sector during 2019.
