With a long bank holiday, Easter, warm weather and colleague member double discount, it was a busy but very successful weekend for the Co-op!

Colleagues up and down the country were moving cases of stock through our depots, delivering them to our shops, keeping our shelves stocked, serving customers and on the phones to contribute to our biggest trading day of the year so far.

A special thank you to those of you who worked over the bank holiday weekend, I hope you got some down time to enjoy the sunshine.

Here are some of our impressive headlines:

  • Sales for the Food business reached £157.9m. That’s £4.8m ahead of budget and +9.9% overall like for like
  • Availability stayed strong at 97% for the week, 11m cases moved through the network and we stayed ahead of target for ‘on-time’ deliveries
  • Beers & Spirits +£2.2m with £1.9m of those sales being in the Beers category
  • Produce +£0.8m down to a successful 2 for £3 berries promotion, Easter flowers and salads
  • Frozen +£0.5m driven by strong Ice Cream performance
  • The sun also sparked people to think about their holidays, with travel insurance sales ahead of target by 103 sales

And for those of you who decided to ditch the warm Sunday evening in favour of tuning in to the latest escapades of AC12 in Line of Duty, might have seen the star of the latest series, Stephen Graham, share his love for the Co-op with the Sun newspaper. He said ‘I love the Co-op. If my wife comes back with a Co-op bag and she’s been without me, I’m like, what are you doing? I was going to go later!’…Brilliant!

So soon after such a great set of annual results for our Coop, to see the Easter trading results showing us building on that momentum and smashing our targets yet again is what makes us all so proud to be part of such a great organisation. The hard work really does pay off and clearly, Stephen Graham agrees…. !
