By Steve Murrells, Co-op CEO

Last Friday evening was a great moment for our Co-op and one we can all take pride in.

Following a huge public vote of support, we took home the prize for ‘Leading Co-op of the Year’ at the Co-operative of the Year Awards.

This year is a significant one for the whole co-operative movement as we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Rochdale Pioneers’ first shop. It’s also the 150th anniversary of Co-op Congress, the annual gathering of co-operatives around the UK, where the awards ceremony took place. So winning this year feels even more special.

I’d like to thank all of you who took the time to vote along with thousands of our members and customers. This is a tremendous award to win. It demonstrates the incredible progress we’ve made together in recent years as we’ve strengthened our business and strengthened the communities in which we trade up and down the country.

As colleagues, it’s your commitment to working here and your belief in all we do that’s enabled us to achieve so much. So this award is for all of us to share. Congratulations!

I’d also like to thank our Council President, Nick Crofts, for collecting the award on our behalf and for energising support while the voting was taking place.

We seem to be ‘on a roll’ at the moment after Jo Whitfield’s ‘Business Woman of the Year’ award and our ‘Grocer of the Year’ award too. Long may it continue!

  1. […] is another fantastic win after winning the Leading Co-op of the Year Award, Jo Whitfield’s ‘Business Woman of the Year’ award and our ‘Grocer of the Year’ award […]

  2. Just wondering if anyone was overseeing “Awards” from a One Co-op perspective? We enter a lot, and we’re good at celebrating when we win, but there doesn’t seem to be a strategy around which ones we should and shouldn’t go for and what we want to be acknowledged externally for being good at. Having some shared resources available to support entries, and make them more consistent would be helpful too, as would be a peer to peer network of people involved in writing entries.

  3. GIven the size of Co-op Group vs all the other co-ops that aren’t nationwide in scope, shouldn’t we question why we are not winning this award every year?

  4. […] What a great start to Co-operative Fortnight as we’ve officially been named Leading Co-op of the Year – you can read more here. […]
