I’m a Risk Support Officer in the West Midlands area. I’ve also got the added job of being the representative from my team on the Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities campaign.
My team and I spend a lot of time out and about in shops, not just observing and helping stores do the right thing, but also listening to what would make people’s jobs easier.
As part of the Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities campaign we’ve been focussing on what will help colleagues feel safer.
Feeling supported by the local police is really important. However, one thing we heard time and time again, is how long it takes to report non-urgent crime when ringing 101. There are times when colleagues could be on the phone for over an hour and when you’re already really busy, this just adds extra pressure.
We did a little more digging and started to talk about how we might use technology to help speed things up, especially now we’ve got store tablets.
With a little help from our IT team, we’ve managed to unlock the majority of local police websites which all have the ability for you to do it online. All you need to do now is log on to your tablet, click on your How do I button and search for the relevant police website. And even better, it only takes about 10 minutes!
But we didn’t stop there.
We’re also changing it so that colleagues get the right time back for what they’ve needed to do that week. It’s as simple as logging your incident on the police website, recording it in MySafety and then at the end of each week we’ll credit back the time it’s taken you to do it. Fairer all round!
We’re continuing to work on all of these little things that make a big difference. The next things on the list are; looking at how we can facilitate sending images to the police, and making sure colleagues feel well equipped to deal with incidents in store and that managers have the information they need to support in the best way.
