By Caroline Sellers, Assistant Secretary

As well as taking steps to look after our colleagues, customers and communities, we’ve spent some time over the past few weeks working out what these unprecedented times will mean for this year’s AGM.

The great news is that it’s still going ahead, but with a social distancing twist to make sure we’re continuing to keep everyone safe.

Instead of hosting the AGM at our usual Manchester Central venue – which sees members and colleagues gather in their hundreds – we’re going to be live-streaming the meeting via YouTube from 1 Angel Square on Saturday 6 June and asking members to stay home, tune in and vote on everything beforehand.

Members will still have the opportunity to submit questions and interact with us on the day, and there’ll be more information on our website about how that’ll all work soon.

There’ll be a small number of eligible colleague members at 1 Angel Square at the meeting to make sure we meet the governance requirements for the AGM, but they’re all local to the area and will be following strict social distancing guidelines.

As a member owned business it’s massively important to us that members still have the chance to get involved in our democracy and vote on:

  • Our motions, which cover important things like what we campaign on and how we work. This year you can have your say on how we address ethical retailing and climate change, along with how we continue to support the co-operative movement
  • Our Member Nominated Directors who help set the business strategy, oversee our commercial and financial performance and make sure we’re staying true to our values and principles
  • Our Council Members who make sure members’ voices and interests are heard at the highest level in our business

Have your say

If you’re eligible, you’ll receive an invitation to vote via email (from or post by Wednesday 13 May before voting closes on Monday 1 June.

To be eligible, you need to have spent £250 at Co-op Food in the 2019 financial year or purchased a Co-op product in one of our other businesses. You can check if you’re eligible by emailing

Just like last year, members will receive their AGM pack online, so you won’t receive a bulky paper pack like you might have in the past, unless you’ve opted to receive information by post.

If you’re eligible and don’t receive an email or letter by Wednesday 13 May, or if you just want to know more about this year’s AGM, please email the team using

In this time of social isolation and uncertainty, being able to connect with our members through something as familiar as our AGM feels extra special. So please put the date in your diary, tune in if you can and vote online by Monday 1 June.
