This year’s VE Day marks 75 years since thousands of people gathered on the streets of Britain to celebrate peace after six years of the Second World War.
There were big plans for the country to mark the anniversary this week – including moving the May bank holiday, a procession down The Mall and a service at Westminster Abbey – but we’re now being asked to stay safe and commemorate the day from home.
But just because we can’t be together to celebrate, doesn’t mean we have to be alone in our acts of remembrance and gratitude.
We’re observing a national two minutes silence in all our stores at 11am on Friday 8 May, and encouraging our customers to take to their doorsteps at 3pm to raise a glass and have a cheer during The Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2.
And it’s set to be a scorcher of a bank holiday, so it’s the perfect excuse to take your celebrations one step further.
With colleague member double discount falling on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May, why not treat your household to stay at home afternoon tea in the garden, or a socially distanced party on your driveway?
Our deliciously decadent Irresistible Salted Caramel Cake at £2.25 is perfect for sharing. We’ve got the drinks sorted, too. Our Green Tea and Elderflower Punch recipe creates a long drink that’s equally fruity and refreshing. And there’s lots more inspiration over on our website, including recipes for a Ginger and Rosemary Spritzer and an Apples and Pears Mocktail.
