Counterfeit notes, over repetitive processes and long-winded cash investigations are three of the biggest challenges I face when doing cash routines.

I was lucky enough to be involved in the SmartCash trial back in October 2019. As SmartCash looks to roll out to all stores from this month, I wanted to share some of my experiences with the new unit, the technology and new processes.

I was excited yet a little apprehensive about the new system as with any new technology, you expect some teething problems. My team and I had read through all the materials and had completed the online training, but sometimes it’s hard to know what to expect in reality.

As one of many investments being made in store, I can say this is one of the best pieces of new equipment we’ve received since our headsets. Not only do the units help save time, but one of the biggest bonuses is colleague safety. We’re now counting minimal cash as the machine does this for you. We’ve massively reduced the number of lifts being completed throughout the week and have accepted zero counterfeit notes since our live date!

However, like all new things, it does take time to adapt. It took us a few weeks to get used to it along with the new processes. Sometimes things didn’t balance or add up and due to lack of experience using the system, and investigating any issues was a bit of a challenge. However, keep at it and don’t panic. Over time, the whole process will feel much smoother and variances will be easier to investigate.

To help make the transition as smooth as possible, be sure to utilise all your tools available, especially headsets, as communication will be key to its success. Completing the SmartCash learning module on MyLearning is also vital, as it will help you learn about the system and how things work.

Get into a routine, this will make the process even simpler, but if you do have questions, I’d recommend the support functions available via IT services, How Do I, store of excellence managers and your store manager guides to help you through.

Once everyone’s up-skilled and confident in the process, you’ll realise how great a tool SmartCash is.
