Tony Hind, Head of Acquisitions and New Store Development
As a food and funerals business, the Co-op has an important role to play to help support the nation through this crisis. Opening new stores means we can continue to serve and support our communities at this difficult time.
Our new Co-op is in an iconic location
We couldn’t have picked a more exciting location for our first one. Pilton is the home of the world-famous Glastonbury festival and Michael Eavis, the festival’s founder, was a massive champion of us coming to the village. He even popped along on the day meet Jo Whitfield, our Food CEO, and open the store.
Our store is the first one in the village for nearly a decade. It’ll give a permanent home to the mobile Post Office, which currently only visits the village for 12 hours a week.
Our aim is to be at the heart of the communities we serve and Pilton’s new Co-op is a great example of how we’re there for local people when and where they need us. We had a pop-up store and Glastonbury last year and, although this year’s festival was cancelled, we’re looking forward to being back at Worthy Farm in 2021.
Here’s what Michael Eavis had to say about our arrival:
“When I was a small boy living in Pilton there were four shops. One by one, each shop was closed, the last one in 2012 following the village Post Office a year earlier. We managed to resurrect the Post Office in the Working Men’s Club building and, thanks to the Co-op, will remain there for the good of the village for years to come. It’s such a terrific thing to get these two most important parts of village life back again. Thanks so much for all of those who put in the spade work to make this happen bang in the middle of this wonderful village of ours.”
Opening and refitting Co-ops helps us achieve our aim of getting closer to where our customers and members live, work and learn. Over the last five years, we’ve opened around 500 new shops across the country, more than any other UK retailer.
We’ll be opening many more new and refitted Co-ops this year. Each of our new stores creates around 15 new jobs for local people and all of our buildings run on 100% renewable electricity.
