Last night the UK was again placed into a further National lockdown, as the spread of the coronavirus continues to endanger more lives and threatens to overrun the NHS. It’s a worrying time for all of us and we know from first-hand experience the added pressure this will place upon the lives of our colleagues, members and communities, but this action is clearly necessary to stop the spread, protect the NHS and save more lives.
Thank you for the herculean effort so far. The way you’ve pulled together locally and nationally has been nothing short of outstanding. I know we’re all physically and emotionally shattered and you’re juggling work and home pressures. Your work is essential. We’re in this together and we will get through this.
Two things fill me with hope and confidence this time around. First, we have a vaccine and a pathway to control this deadly virus in 2021. And secondly, I know that our Co-op response will be as thorough and powerful as it was 8 months ago. We will again help to feed and care for the nation, we’ll maintain the highest standards of safety to protect our colleagues and customers and we’ll continue to co-operate to help support our communities at this time of need.
In 2020 we showed the true value of the UK having a strong Co-op, one capable of delivering for its customers and members under the most extreme of circumstances. At the start of 2021, we face the same challenges but we have the experience and commitment to overcome them together once again as we continue to co-operate for a fairer world.
