For those of you that might not know, Co-op Power was established in 2003 to acquire 100 per cent renewable  and ethically-sourced green electricity for our Co-op. It’s not only the right thing to do now and for future generations, but taking the lead on issues that matter the most is just what we do.

Co-operating to demand better value has always been at the heart of the Co-op. It’s this belief that’s helped us grow into the biggest energy buying Co-operative in the UK; and how we’ve saved our members over £100m in energy costs and counting.

But the value we offer is so much more than cheaper bills.

We navigate the market so our customers don’t have to, leveraging our own energy buying power with other organisations to gain better value for all: price, people and planet.

Over the last two years, our Co-op Academies in Greater Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, the Wirral and Stoke-on-Trent have each saved on average £50,000 on thier energy bills. The £500,000 combined total saving has been re-invested back into eduction at a time of great need and we’ve estimated the saving would be equivalent to 3,000 laptops and over 227,000 school meals!

Each school has benefited from being part of our buying collective as well as our advice on energy usage on weekends and during school holidays when schools are closed, and especially during the pandemic.

The significant savings we’ve been able to provide have come at a much-needed time, as energy costs continue to rise and continue to be one of school’s biggest overheads.

Christopher Tomlinson, Co-op Academies Trust CEO said “It’s great to see that some of our academies have made such a significant saving through Co-op Power. During this time of uncertainty for schools, we’re so pleased that the money saved has gone towards supporting education. We will be looking to get more of our academies on board as soon as possible, so that they can start to reap the benefits.”
